2020-03-20 – Cairns and Fruit Bats

We spent much of the day hunkered down in our hotel room working on photos and travel plans.  Things are still mostly open and operating but isolation is a good thing in these times.

On the way back from dinner this evening we were treated to quite a natural phenomenon…the fruit bats were heading out from the trees in town for their trip to the forests for dinner.  There were tens of thousands of them flying in “bat rivers”.

We learned later that some bat colonies have over 300,000 individuals.  That is a lot of bats.
